In 1999, Ahmed Zewail received the chemistry Nobel prize for his pioneering work in the field of femtochemistry, where chemical bond breaking is studied using time-delayed, ultrashort laser pulses. This PhD project is about the coherent control of chemical reactions using atoms which are prepared in a coherent superposition state. The PhD student will study the degree of control that can be achieved for reactions between different species using a velocity-map-imaging spectrometer that he or she will set-up over the course of the project.
